Facts about Betaine

Some facts about Betaine are that it plays a critical role in the health of the cardiovascular system, and reduces potentially toxic levels of homocysteine (Hcy), an amino acid found normally in the body.

Homocysteine metabolism is linked to that of several vitamins, especially folic acid, B6, and B12, and deficiencies of those vitamins may cause elevated Hcy levels.

In recent years, studies have suggested that a high level of Hcy increases a person's chance of developing heart disease, stroke, and peripheral vascular disease (reduced blood flow to the hands and feet).

Most people typically do not eat enough fruits and vegetables, which may limit their dietary intake of betaine and the B vitamins, thereby creating a potential need for supplementation.

Facts about Betaine

Betaine HCl may also be beneficial for ...
  • allergic rhinitis

  • asthma

  • anemia

  • diarrhoea

  • atherosclerosis

  • candidiasis

  • Bacterial Infections

  • food allergies

  • high cholesterol

  • heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and thyroid disorders

Since Betaine is acidic, large amounts can burn the lining of the stomach. If a burning sensation is experienced, betaine HCl should be immediately discontinued. Anyone with a history of peptic ulcers, gastritis, or gastrointestinal symptoms, and particularly heartburn, should see a doctor before taking betaine HCl.

Tips for Choosing Nutritional Supplements

  • Vitamins, minerals and other nutrients work best when they're combined in a way that mimics nature as closely as possible. Look for nutritional supplements that have nutrients combined to make use of the natural synergy between them.

  • Companies willing to give a full disclosure and description of their ingredients have usually put more effort and research into their product. For example, instead of just saying "Calcium" the label should be more detailed like this: "Calcium (from 2430 mg Citrate, Malate, Ester-C)". This description indicates that higher quality ingredients and more up-to-date research was used for the supplement.

  • Produced at pharmaceutical GMP (good manufacturing practices) facilities
In the United States, nutritional supplements are regulated as a food product rather than the more restrictive regulations that drugs fall under. Currently, compliance to GMP standards is voluntary so it's important to do your own research to verify that macro-biological testing is done at every stage of production to make sure that the lab did not contaminate the product.

(This issue shouldn't be taken lightly - studies by Consumerlab have shown that some supplements don't have the true amount of ingredients as stated on the label, or may harbor toxic contaminants.)

Pharmaceutical grade supplements (sometimes called nutriceuticals) are made for "professional" use in the health care field by natural health care providers and consumers who want the best.
