High blood pressure is when blood being pumped through the arteries is constricted by plaque build-up (arteriosclerosis or atherosclerosis), and/or inflamation. When arteries harden and constrict, the blood is forced through a passageway that is narrower than normal, which results in HBP.

Because the heart must work much harder in people with HBP, this can often lead to catastrophic health conditions like heart failure and stroke. HBP is associated with conditions like coronary heart disease, arteriosclerosis, obesity, along with kidney and thyroid disorders.

Some high blood pressure causes include:
  • poor diet (refined and processed food)
  • vitamin deficiencies

  • being overweight

  • stress (causes walls of arteries to constrict)

  • cigarette smoking

  • excessive use of stimulants like coffee or tea

  • drug abuse

  • contraceptives

High sodium intake is also a cause of high blood pressure, although I think it's important to point out the difference between highly refined sodium (table salt) and unrefined sea salt.

Refined table salt (sodium) has been over-processed and reduced to just two elements - sodium and chloride - this is all that's left from the original 72 elements that are important for the body and necessary for health. The body recognizes sodium chloride as a poison and must work hard to quickly eliminate it. Also, a lot of refined salts on the market contain toxic anti-caking agents that sometimes contain aluminum in a metallic form which is not something you ever want to have in your food.

High Blood Pressure Natural Cures - Unrefined Sea Salt

Unrefined salt on the other hand contains up to 72 minerals and trace elements that are the essential building blocks of human life. The differences are vast because any imbalance of singular nutrients like isolated sodium and chloride will imbalance your whole mineral metabolism in your body. We all need the nutrients in the right proportions and unrefined salt contains the 72 essential minerals and trace elements in very similar proportions as are found in human blood or in the fluids inside of human cells.

So while refined sodium has been considered detrimental to health for years, and we've been advised to cut it out of our diets (especially if you have high blood pressure!), salt in it's pure, unrefined state has always been an essential nutrient. Refined salt can cause water retention which is what makes blood pressure rise beyond normal levels. Natural crystal salt gives your body the minerals it needs to help it return to balance.

Another benefit of natural salt that I've had experience with is how it supports the adrenal glands when you're under lots of stress. I think lots of us may be dragging ourselves through each day (fatiqued) in part because of adrenal exhaustion. This is when your adrenals are constantly activated and pumping adrenaline in response to whatever stress you're experiencing. Eventually the adrenals can become exhausted, and this can lead to more problems (high blood pressure, chronic fatique, etc.) if it's not addressed.

High Blood Pressure Symptoms

High blood pressure is sometimes called "the silent killer" because the physical symptoms of high blood pressure can be subtle until the advanced stages - and of course you don't want to wait until the advanced stages to take action!

Here are some advanced symptoms:

  • headaches

  • rapid pulse

  • frequent sweating

  • shortness of breath

  • dizziness

If you're in touch with your body, these advanced symptoms will obviously be very noticeable. Ideally you'll be dealing with the problem before it gets to this stage - but if not, it's still not too late.

If you want to catch high blood pressure before the condition becomes advanced, you'll want to tune in to some symptoms that we sometimes just learn to live with. In general, symptoms that could indicate poor digestion, liver and/or colon congestion may be considered to be possible symptoms of high blood pressure.

Some of these are...

  • indigestion

  • acid reflux

  • roseacea and skin rashes

  • gas and bloating

  • constipation (less than one bowel movement per day)

We often don't understand the progression of physical symptoms - how years of chronic indigestion, gas and constipation can possibly develop into something more serious like HBP and/or heart disease.

If you have any of these symptoms it's wise to take them seriously, have the necessary tests to determine your blood pressure and levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, etc. and address the vitamin and mineral deficiencies (and other issues) behind them. Natural High Blood Pressure Cures - High Blood Pressure Diet

Often a low-fat diet is recommended to help reduce high blood pressure, but decades of research and experience have shown that this approach isn't effective. Not only are low fat diets not effective, it's nearly impossible to stay on a diet based on restricting calories and self-denial.

A low-carb diet that allows for moderate consumption of fat and protein has been shown to help reduce HBP. In fact Dr. Atkins (of the Atkins Diet) says that "nothing is more consistently and rapidly observed (with the Atkins diet), than the normalization of blood pressure".

People sometimes say that Atkins is just another fad diet, but I tend to disagree. For one thing Dr. Atkins first published his book, "Dr. Atkins Diet Revolution" in the early 70's, and his diet is more popular now than ever. Having been on a low carb diet (like Atkins) for many years, there are many things I've come to appreciate about it. I think low carb diets like Atkins provide a much needed balance for people who have tried to eat "healthy" the low-fat, high carb way without success. I think low carb diets are closer to the way people ate when heart disease was uncommon.

For me the key to success has been not to look at the Atkins diet as a diet, but instead as more balanced way to eat that becomes a way of life. Sometimes people say that the induction phase of Atkins is unbalanced or even dangerous. (the induction phase is in the beginning when carbs are severely restricted and the body shifts from fat storing to fat burning mode) I think there would still be great benefits even if the induction were skipped altogether. But people are drawn to the fast and impressive weight loss potential of the induction phase.

For many people, The Atkins Diet may provide a way to address issues like high blood pressure, high cholesterol and triglycerices and weight loss all without calorie-counting or going hungry!

Tips for Choosing Nutritional Supplements

High quality Nutritional Supplements can often be very helpful in normalizing blood pressure. We recommend Pharmaceutical grade supplements (sometimes called nutriceuticals). These are made for "professional" use in the health care field by natural health care providers and consumers who want the best.
  • Vitamins, minerals and other nutrients work best when they're combined in a way that mimics nature as closely as possible. Look for nutritional supplements that have nutrients combined to make use of the natural synergy between them.

  • Companies willing to give a full disclosure and description of their ingredients have usually put more effort and research into their product. For example, instead of just saying "Calcium" the label should be more detailed like this: "Calcium (from 2430 mg Citrate, Malate, Ester-C)". This description indicates that higher quality ingredients and more up-to-date research was used for the supplement.

  • Produced at pharmaceutical GMP (good manufacturing practices) facilities
In the United States, nutritional supplements are regulated as a food product rather than the more restrictive regulations that drugs fall under. Currently, compliance to GMP standards is voluntary so it's important to do your own research to verify that macro-biological testing is done at every stage of production to make sure that the lab did not contaminate the product.

(This issue shouldn't be taken lightly - studies by Consumerlab have shown that some supplements don't have the true amount of ingredients as stated on the label, or may harbor toxic contaminants.)
