Hypoglycemia: The Facts Everyone Needs To Know

Symptoms of Hypoglycemia

In our ongoing service to answer our newsletter subscriber questions I wanted to cover the topic of hypoglycemia.

From Taber's Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary:

"Hypoglycemia, an abnormal low level of glucose in the blood. May be caused by insulin or oral anti-diabetic drug overdoses; failure to eat an adequate number of calories despite diabetic treatments; unusual levels of exercise (again, usually among treated diabetics); extreme starvation; alcoholic depletion of carbohydrate reserves from the liver; salicylate overdoses; and rarely, by an insulin-secreting tumor of the pancreas."

Diabetics who constantly monitor their blood sugar daily can avoid drastic changes in their blood sugar by paying close attention to their diets and insulin levels. Those who don't can place themselves at severe risk.

But...what Taber's doesn't tell you is that there are over 40 million people walking around today who are pre-diabetic and that the vast majority don't know they are on the verge of becoming a diabetic and that many are constantly feeling tired and irritable and don't know that they are hypoglycemic.

In addition to diabetes, there are other causes for hypoglycemia which are not easily discernable and so sufferers go from doctor to doctor without ever getting any help because there is no simple test for hypoglycemia and they are eventually classified as being hypochondriacs.

Not a pretty picture and yes, there are ways to help yourself nutritionally.

Hypoglycemia is nothing to fool with as many of the following symptoms can negatively and dangerously impact your health and your life:

Those with moderate low blood sugar may feel fatigued, dizzy, restless, hungry, or unusually irritable; have difficulty concentrating; or have spontaneous episodes of sweating, palpitations, tremor, or nausea.

This can be reversed with glucose contributing foods but do not try to learn how to do this by yourself. Get professional assistance to work out a plan to learn the symptoms and how to immediately reverse them. More on this advise.

Severely low blood sugar produces delirium, violent behaviors, seizures, coma, and occasionally death. Under these severe conditions, nothing should be taken orally. It may cause aspiration (you'll choke to death). Glucose will need to be injected. Call 911 immediately as you are at severe risk.

Fortunately there are people like Roberta Ruggiero who founded the The Hypoglycemia Support Foundation, Inc and can help with the advice you need. www.hypoglycemia.org .

As Roberta says, hypoglycemia is all too often misunderstood and too often a misdiagnosed condition.

Roberta's web site will give you all kinds of useful and valuable information that will lift the mysterious cloak that overshadows hypoglycemia to get you back to living a normal life. She has also written a book on the do's and don'ts that I highly recommend you purchase. You'll find it on the foundation's web site and it is very reasonably priced. About $15.

Here are two important quotations from the foundation's web site:

"Tired of being tired? Sick of feeling anxious and depressed? Want to learn to control it?"

From Roberta's latest best seller "The Do's and Dont's of Hypoglycemia" An Everyday Guide to Low Blood Sugar"

"...If you think you may be going crazy; if you have thoughts of suicide; if you're constantly exhausted, anxious and depressed; if you go weeks without a decent night's sleep; if your personality changes like the flip of a coin; if a counter full of munchies doesn't satisfy your sweet tooth; and if your doctor thinks you might be a hypochondriac because medical tests don't show anything physically wrong with you - don't despair, there's hope!"

Roberta is right. There is hope, as a matter of fact there's a lot of hope, and again, unfortunately, it doesn't come from the main stream medical profession.

Always remember, your body is a great healer...but only if given the right nutrients.

If you know anyone who you suspect may be hypoglycemic, help them have a great holiday season by helping them to get a normal life. Send them to the foundation's web site at: www.hypoglycemia.org and feel good about yourself.
